There is no single cure for depression ~ it attacks from all angles- your body, your mind + your spirit. That’s why addressing all three are essential for getting better. I have suffered from depression and I know what every one of those feelings in this videos (below) is like. Thank God (literally) that I no longer struggle with it, but it is something that I have to take preventative measures for on a daily basis. There are some days when I wake up and feel like there is a real battle in my head going on, fighting away these thoughts that are overwhelming- that it’s going to be a bad day, that I’m not good enough, that I’m all alone and on and on- if you’ve ever struggled with depression, you know what I’m talking about.

So how have I managed through my depression and overcome these thoughts to have a productive and great day? A healthy diet high in nutrients + daily exercise + feeding my soul with His word, daily prayer and meditation are what get me through.

As far as a healthy diet goes, there are nutrients that have been shown to help combat depression. These nutrients include:

  • B vitamins (especially B12): found in dark green leafy veggies, eggs, organic meat and poultry
  • Histadine: found in Greens such as collard greens, kale and spinach; wild-caught fish and bananas
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: found in avocados, eggs, nuts, olives, seeds and wild-caught fish

Every day I make an effort to feed my body with the right foods. God gave us what we need to fuel our bodies so that they run optimally and let me tell ya, these are not foods that come out of a package. No, Ho Hos and Lays are not what He had in mind when He gave us cacao (chocolate) and potatoes, haha!

You don’t have to be a member of a gym or an extreme body builder to exercise. If you can even squeeze just a 10 minute walk in daily, you will experience benefits. You have 1440 minutes in a day- so dedicate just 60 of them to exercise and prayer. You will be amazed at what that can do for you! If you can’t give up an hour, try starting with 10 minutes per day- 5 exercise and 5 praying and see how fast you grow and develop into craving this time!

This is a great video on what it feels like to be depressed. Like it says in the video, there is no shame in seeking help for depression, the only shame is that it makes you miss out on a beautiful life. I love that they discussed both exercise and meditation in this video. Because depression attacks your physiological functions and your thoughts, it is so imperative to take action on all 3 angles.

 

They did skip nutrition in the video but other than adding that, the only change I would’ve made is that they mention medications can help people suffering. On the contrary, there is evidence that medications commonly used for depression not only are ineffective, but they can also make things worse. [1] [2] If you can, take a holistic approach to managing depression and save medication as a last resort.
